ACADEMICS
In the early years of Elementary School, both inter and transdisciplinary projects are developed focused on social-interactionism and active learning methodologies. Here, teachers are mediators of the teaching process whose authorship is, in practice, of each of our children.
THE USE OF ENGLISH IN THE EARLY YEARS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
In the first bimester of 1st grade, students are introduced to Elementary Education through the Passport Project. In it, the children take a trip through countries that use English as their main language.By using games and performing some oral activities, students are subtly inserted into the academic world.
In these first years of Elementary School, the curriculum consists of 10 weekly classes taught in English, allowing students to become quickly familiar with the structures, orality and vocabulary of the language and, consequently, making the language acquisition a natural and spontaneous task. The content of such classes is divided into:
Use of English: in these classes, students properly study the English language, its grammatical structures and vocabulary, practicing listening, speaking and reading skills.
Bilingual content: here, students are taught “in English” – not the “English language”. The content is varied and includes Science, History and Geography classes. Skills such as listening, speaking and reading continue to be worked on, but in an indirect way.
CAMBRIDGE EXAMS
The Cambridge Exams start in 3rd grade. Starters, Movers and Flyers tests are taken by the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades, respectively. All the preparatory content for the exams is worked on in classes throughout the school year and, through simulation tests, students get to understand the structure of the exam and, therefore, become acquainted with it and feel well prepared for the big day.
ENGLISH CLUB: OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT PROGRAM
New students who have little or no contact at all with the bilingual context or current students who have some difficulty regarding the English language are invited to our English Club, a program which takes place weekly after school hours – and at no additional cost. In it, students are clustered according to their current level of English, regardless of the grade they are in. The assessments, which are prepared by English Club teachers twice a month, are based only on the content studied in the program – which makes the child feel more comfortable. Depending on the outcome of the assessment, the student may be released from the program or continue to attend it. The English Club’s big differential is the individualized look at each student and their difficulties. The results and the quick evolution of the students who engage in the program are surprising!
INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATIONAL ORIENTATION
Through weekly content verification activities, teachers are able to monitor the performance of each student individually, promptly emphasizing each difficulty encountered during the bimester. Support Portuguese, Math and English classes are offered, at no additional cost, throughout the school year.
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)
Our curriculum includes weekly Social Emotional Learning classes, ministered by a Psychopedagogue. During the classes, children begin to develop soft skills and social emotional and affective skills. They learn how to identify, name and manage their emotions – creating essential bonds, such as empathy and respect.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP, CREATIVE ECONOMY AND GAMIFICATION
In these years, several projects are also worked on, such as Entrepreneurship, in partnership with Sebrae; Creative Economy, in partnership with Belas Artes University Center; and Gamification, in partnership with Escape60 Edu.
